CAA 2027

PAD's CAA 2027 session topic is "Public Art and Pedagogy." CAA will be in New York City next year, February 3-6. The deadline for proposal submissions is August 31st.  Here is the CFP and (in case there is a firewall):

PUBLIC ART AND PEDAGOGY

Public Art in a sense is always a form of pedagogy, as its intended visibility functions to provoke attention, interpretation, and conversation. In recent years, scholars have developed frameworks for analyzing public art utilizing methodologies which derive from numerous disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, as well as art, architecture, and design. These varied ‘homes’ for the study of public art analyze political, economic, social, demographic, and/or aesthetic dimensions of historic and contemporary examples. Always, the material realities of public art (whether realized or not) provide a grounding focus on sensory experiences in relationship to intended purposes and unintended consequences.

This session is devoted to sharing innovative, or time-tested, examples of how we productively teach public art. Papers are welcome from both studio art and art history faculty which address practical and/or philosophical choices underlying concrete examples of curriculum. How should we choose which public art to teach and how to teach it? What modes of engaging students in complex and productive dialogue are best suited to our current era of technological and political disruption?
